But I am most in love with the Chinese style of visual presentation. If in 20 years, after I’ve made a lot more movies, they write one sentence about me in a textbook, I’d be satisfied if they said: ‘Zhang Yimou’s style is strong visual presentation in a distinctly Chinese fashion.’”
–Zhang Yimou, from his TIME magazine interview
on what he wants people to most remember about his films.
Zhang Yimou, born November 14, 1951, could be China’s most celebrated director. His films Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, The Story of Qui Ju, To Live, Not One Less, and Hero have been recognized and won awards in many international film festivals such as the Venice International Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival and the American Academy Awards.
Recently, he’s been tapped by the Chinese government to direct both the open and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
