SineBuano : Breaking In

Many people have asked me for tips how to “break in” to the local filmmaking industry. I tell them NOT to do what this guy do…

… unless one is an actor, then of course one has to “perform” a scene which such skill presented by good ol’ Jack.

Seriously, seriously here’s one-sure-fire-way to get into the Philippine TV & Film Industry.

When friends ask, “I’d like to get into the local film & TV industry in the Philippines, how would I go about it.”

I would answer, truthfully, “If you’ve got money to spend, better spend it and stay in Manila. Enroll in the UP Film Institute or in the school helmed by acclaimed and awared director Marilou Diaz Abaya. Or get into those workshops that certain sectors in the industy hold once a year in Tagaytay or elsewhere. Or those hosted by the big TV networks like ABS-CBN and GMA who have their own film studios.

Either one enroll in school or join these workshops, the goal is simple: make connections. Show those in the “biz” that one is humble, eager, has a pleasant personality, competent and “masipag” (having good work ethics). Doing so could give you the chance of someone liking you and seeing potential in you then hire you as an apprentice or a temp.

It’s quite similar to the “system” established in Hollywood, you have to go there and show people what you can do.

It’s a lot of hard work, and sometimes you don’t get well-compensated but one could think of it as “pruning” or “churning out the cream”. Competition’s tough because many are willing, but only few push hard enough to stay and succeed.

For those who are interested, GMA Artist Center’s Talent Development is offering its summer workshops on film and TV production, photography, acting, dance and singing. You can now register, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the GMAAC office.

Bring the following: two 1×1 photos, one 2×2 photo, one 4R full body picture, and valid IDs. GMA employees and enrollees they represent get a 15 percent discount in all workshops.

For further inquiries, call 928-7777 local 2360 to 61, look for Randy or Chac. You may also call 0918-6080715.

Take note the keyword is TALENT DEVELOPMENT, one could take it as they’re looking for talents to develop, talents in film and TV production, photography et cetera.

Go there and show them what you can give.
