Pinoy Indie: Miserable Cinema?

by Diem ~ October 8th, 2008. Filed under: SineBuano Articles.

I recently come across this interesting however lengthy article by a J. Neil C. Garcia and his observations on the local Philippine independent cinema, comparisons with this present cinema ’s filmmakers to their predecessors and details on this recurring movement of “miserablism” that is so the focus and vehicle of many independent Filipino filmmakers of today.

I invite you to read Mr. Garcia’s article here and share your views about his critical analysis. Has he got Pinoy Independent Cinema right on the gut?

In a sense, Neil has nailed it but only to those widely-distributed and celebrated “indie” films of the North [Manila and sorrounding areas].

However, I don’t think it applies much to the variety of “indie” films that are sprouting everywhere in the country.

Nevertheless, the word “indie” is too abused and general to describe the new genre of digital filmmakers.

Anyway, we have got to prove to Neil that SineBuano is different. ;)

Sakto jud ka brother Marlon. The challenge is indeed to come up as different through the stories and topics we choose to film, and how we film them :D
