African Cinema this SineKultura 2012

USC’s SineKultura begins 2012 with this week’s screenings of select films from Africa.

SineKultura is a weekly cinema appreciation event facilitated by the Cinema Department of the College of Fine Arts and Architecture(CAFA), the University of San Carlos-Cebu City. The event aims to bring cinema awareness and education the the Cebuano audiences.

Screenings are held weekly, every Monday-Wednesday-Friday at 6 P.M. at the USC-CAFA Theater, Talamban Cebu. Screenings are free and open to the general public.

 4 JANUARY 2012 – “MUNYURANGABO” (2007), directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

“Munyurangabo” is Chung’s first feature film, premiered in the Un Certain Regard program at the Cannes Film Festival.

From two separate tribes, Munyurangabo and Sangwa’s friendship is tested when Sangwa’s wary parents disapprove of Munyurangabo, warning that “Hutus and Tutsis are supposed to be enemies.”

After stealing a machete from a market in Kigali, the two boys leave the city on a journey to resolve their pasts. Munyurangabo wants justice for his parents who were killed in the genocide, and Sangwa wants to visit the home he deserted years ago.

 

6 JANUARY 2012 – “MOOLADE”(2004) by  Ousmane Sembène

It addresses the subject of female genital mutilation, a common practice in a number of African countries, especially those immediately south of the Sahara Desert.

Filmed in the remote village of Djerrisso, Burkina Faso, this is the story of a village woman, Collé, who uses moolaadé (“magical protection”) to protect a group of girls from experiencing female genital cutting, which the villagers call “purification”.  She is opposed by the village who believe in its necessity.

The film won the Prix Un Certain Regard and a special mention in the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Fatoumata Coulibaly won Best Actress in the Cinemanila International Film Festival, 2005. Ousmane Sembène won the Los Angeles Pan African Film Festival including jury award in 2005, the Marrakech International Film Festival including Special Jury Award in 2004.

The film won the National Society of Film Critics Awards, USA including Best Foreign Language Film in 2005.
